Munson, Ruiz, and England Claim Titles at IHA Singles Tourney
Open Championship is Munson’s third singles crown this year

  

David Munson won his third tournament of the season.
DES PLAINES, IL - Fourteen Foresters competed in the 2004 Illinois Handball Association Singles Tournament over the weekend (January 22-24). The squad brought home titles in three of the five divisions.

Senior David Munson (Williston, VT) continued his extremely successful season by claiming the Open Division title. He knocked off former teammate Bill Mehilos ’03 (7-21, 21-5, 11-4) in the semifinals and defeated Jamie Simon (21-9, 18-21, 11-4) in the championship match. It was the team captain’s third singles championship and fourth overall title of the year.

In the A-Division, sophomore Ivan Ruiz (Los Angeles, CA) defeated classmate Tyler Stevens (Toledo, OH) in three sets (21-11, 13-21, 11-4) in the championship after eliminating another sophomore, Arturo Herrera (Anchorage, AK), in three sets (19-21, 21-8, 11-7) in the semifinals. Stevens also needed three sets (21-10, 15-21, 11-6) to knock off senior Garrett Silveira (S. Hadley, MA) in the other semifinal.

Sophomore Derek Meiring (Carleton, MI) won three times before falling in the B-Division semifinals. Junior Marty Quinn (Evergreen Park, IL) and senior Dan McNabney (Moro, IL) each won in the division’s round of 32.

Senior Samantha England (Prince George, British Columbia) defeated junior Chris Prater (Kentwood, MI) in the semifinals of the C-Division Consolation bracket and went on to claim the divisional title.

The Foresters will enjoy a couple of weekends off before competing again. The next event on the team’s schedule is the Circle City Tournament in Indianapolis on February 13-15.
