ZAMORA CLAIMS IHA STATE SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP

The I.H.A Women's State Singles Championships were conducted for the first time as a separate event. Lake Forest College hosted the tournament and one of their own, Sabrina Zamora, battled her way to the open championship. Zamora defeated Chicago's Tanya Lazaro in the semifinals. Lazaro stormed to a 21-9 first game win but could not sustain her momentum in the second game, losing 21-12. In the tie-breaker Zamora gained the serve at 9-9 and scratched out two hard points for the victory.

In the other semfinal, two of Illinois's finest young players met -- Lynn Alesi, bound for Texas A&M next fall where she will join her brother Brad, and Megan Mehilos, who will join her brother Bill next fall at Lake Forest. Mehilos eventually prevailed in three games, 17-21, 21-20, 11-6.

In the finals, Mehilos came out strong in the first game with a convincing 21-11 win, but Zamora rallied to win the final two games, 21-9, 11-2. The win gave Zamora her second I.H.A. State Singles Championship. She also won in 1998.

In the A Division finals, Erika Sove defeated Mary Gerke, 21-6, 21-7. Niamh Conneely won the B Division with a 21-8, 21-17 win over Terry Mehilos. In the consolation finals, Lake Forest sophomore Leslie Boyle battled to a 21-7, 15-21, 11-3 win over Lagrange YMCA Physical Education Director, Monica Zecker.

The Foresters will travel to Indianapolis next weekend to participate in the Circle City Classic. As a tune-up for the Intercollegiate Championships, the men and women will be entered in both singles and doubles competition.
