Foresters Advance Two to Semifinals, One to Finals of I.H.A. Contenders

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Lake Forest College played host to the Illinois Handball Association Contenders Tournament over the weekend (November 9-10). Twenty-eight players competed in the event, including nine Foresters.

Seeded third in the event, freshman Nikolai Nahorniak (Des Plaines, Ill.) received a first-round bye before rattling off three straight victories to reach the championship match, where he fell to Former Forester Shane Conneely 21-18, 21-11. Nahorniak defeated senior Kevin Jarvis (Chicago, Ill.) 21-10, 21-12 in the semifinals. Jarvis, who was seeded 10th, knocked off the #7 seed in the round of 16 and 15th-seeded freshman Victor Perez (Los Angeles, Calif.) 16-21, 21-12, 11-7 in the quarterfinals. Perez had eliminated the #2 seed 21-20, 21-14 in the round of 16.

Senior Tom Pfeil (Philadelphia, Pa.) posted a 21-9, 21-12 victory and sophomore Brian Connolly (Lemont, Ill.) prevailed 21-20, 21-15 in the opening round.

Junior Mike Carpenter (St. Peters, Mo.) and sophomore Joey Urbani (Bozeman, Mont.) won once each in the B Division before facing off in the semifinals. Carpenter edged out Urbani 21-17, 21-20 in that match before falling in the final.

Lake Forest will also host the Illinois Handball Association Women’s Singles Tournament next weekend (November 16-17). The next competition for the Forester men will be at the Milwaukee Classic in three weeks (November 30-December 2).
