Mike Mehilos Advances to the Finals of I.H.A. Contenders
Ivan Ruiz wins A Division title

  

Mike Mehilos nearly won the title from his #6 seed.
LAKE FOREST, IL - Forester handball players began their 2005-06 season with the Illinois Handball Association Joe Ardito Contenders Tournament over the weekend (November 11-12). The event was held in the Sports Center on campus and included 22 players.

Sophomore Mike Mehilos (Addison, IL) was the number six seed entering the tournament but upset the number three seed 21-20, 20-21, 11-8 in the quarterfinals and the number two seed 21-20, 21-20 in the semifinals to reach the championship match. His run at the title ended there with a 21-16, 21-15 defeat.

Two other Foresters advanced to the quarterfinal round. Senior Ivan Ruiz (Los Angeles, CA) was the number three seed who fell to Mehilos and freshman Bill O’Donnell (Bayside, NY) was defeated by the eventual champion. Ruiz and O’Donnell then squared off in the semifinals of the A Division, with Ruiz coming out on top of a 21-20, 21-20 decision. He also defeated his next opponent 21-9, 21-10 in the final.

First round victories were also posted by seniors Arturo Herrera (Anchorage, AK) and Rob Burda (Meridian, ID) and sophomore Carly Stickles (Ridgeway, ON). Herrera also won once in the B Division bracket.

The Lake Forest women will be in action next weekend (November 18-19) in the I.H.A. Women’s Singles Tournament. The event will also be played at the College.
