Dave Munson Wins 50th Annual IHA Contenders Singles Championship
Sophomore becomes 17th Forester to take title

Sophomore David Munson is the 6th straight Forester to win the IHA Contenders Tourney.
LAKE FOREST, IL - For the 6th consecutive year and the 17th time in the tournament's 50-year history, a Lake Forest College handball player has come out on top of the Joe Ardito Contenders handball tournament. Sophomore David Munson (Williston, VT) was this year's champion.

Because there were 31 players entered in the tournament, which took place on Friday and Saturday (November 16-17th), the top-seeded Munson received a first-round bye. After winning his second and third-round matches in two sets each, he dropped the first set in the title match, 21-18. Munson settled down and won the second set, 21-12, and the tiebreaker, 11-2, over Jamie Simon of Des Plaines.

Other Lake Forest players in the event included freshman Ference Dominguez (Elmhurst, NY) and sophomore Jordan Fromstein (Thornhill, Ontario), who each won their first-round matches but fell in round two. Sophomore Megan Mehilos (Addison, IL) was the only female in the event and advanced to the second round of the "Drop Down" bracket, which was made up of all the players eliminated in the first round. Freshman Alex Martinez (Andover, CT) won the finals of the "Drop Down" bracket.

Because of its status as a developmental tournament, winners are not allowed to play in future years. Munson and senior Bill Mehilos (Addison, IL), last year's champion, will both be ineligible to compete in 2002.

The next event on the Foresters' schedule is the Milwaukee Classic, which will begin on Friday, November 30th, and conclude on Sunday, December 2nd.
