Aimee Ulbert Reaches the Final of the I.H.A. Women’s Singles Tourney

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Lake Forest College played host to the Illinois Handball Association Women’s Singles Tournament over the weekend (November 16-17). Seventeen players competed in the event, including 10 current and two former Foresters.

Sophomore Aimee Ulbert (Des Plaines, Ill.) defeated three teammates to reach the event’s final, where she fell 21-7, 21-5 to former Lake Forest player Megan Mehilos, who won the tournament for the sixth straight year. Ulbert’s semifinal opponent was classmate Emily Zender (Fishers, Ind.), who she defeated 21-12, 21-1. Zender had upset third-seeded Lisa Jeziorny, another former Forester, 21-8, 21-4 in the quarterfinals.

Senior Kim Braden (Beloit, Wis.) and junior Alex Charron (Calgary, Alb.) also posted first round victories before falling in the quarterfinals. The two eventually met up in the A Division’s third-place match, where Braden prevailed 15-21, 21-15, 11-5.

Junior Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill.) and freshman Nicole Moser (Oak Lawn, Ill.) posted quarterfinal victories in the B Division. After both fell in the semifinals, Michal defeated Moser 21-5, 21-6 in the third-place match.

Sophomore Hayley Roberts (La Grange, Ill.) won three straight matches to claim the C Division title. She defeated freshman Jaclyn Selestow (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) 21-10, 21-7 in the final after Selestow was victorious against fellow freshman Sarah Brusig (Rifle, Colo.) 21-16, 15-21, 11-7 in the semifinals. Brusig went on to win the third-place match 21-5, 21-15.

Lake Forest’s men’s players will compete in the Milwaukee Classic in two weeks (November 30-December 2). The next event on the schedule for the Forester women is the United States Handball Association Classic in Syosset, New York, January 24-27.
