Bill Mehilos Claims I.H.A. Contenders Championship
Teammate Mark O'Leary also advances to title match

LAKE FOREST, IL - Lake Forest College junior Bill Mehilos (Addison, IL) won the 2000 Illinois Handball Association Contenders title on Saturday (November 18th) with a 18-21, 21-12, 11-9 win over Forester teammate Mark O'Leary (South Boston, MA) in the championship match. The event took place at the Lake Forest Sports Center and spanned two days.

Mehilos advanced to the final match with three two-game wins, while O'Leary's route to the championship was much bumpier. He needed tie-breakers to win both his quarterfinal and semifinal matches.

O'Leary defeated freshman David Munson (Williston, VT), 19-21, 21-3, 11-9, in the semifinals. Munson, playing as the eighth seed, reached the semis after upsetting top-seeded Adam Szatkowski '98 in the previous round by a score of 21-14, 21-19.

Munson's brother, senior Mike Munson (Williston, VT), was the fourth Forester to advance to the quarterfinals, where he lost to Brian Johnson '00. Munson recently completed his senior season on the Lake Forest men's soccer team that compiled a 12-6-0 overall record in 2000.

In the play-back, two-pool portion of the tournament, senior Keith Vassall (Brooklyn, NY) finished with a 4-1 record. He met Jason Keasling of Lincolnshire (who compiled a 5-0 mark in pool play) in the play-back championship, with Keasling prevailing 21-15.

The next action for the Lake Forest handball team will come at the Milwaukee Classic in West Allis, WI on Friday, December 1st through Sunday, December 3rd.
