Lake Forest Hosts 2004 I.H.A. Contenders
Two Forester alumni battle for title

  

Garrett Silveira reached the Open Division semifinals.
LAKE FOREST, IL - Lake Forest College played host to the 2004 Illinois Handball Association Contenders Tournament over the weekend (November 19-20). Twenty-four players competed in the event, including 11 current Foresters.

Senior Garrett Silveira (S. Hadley, MA) was Lake Forest’s top finisher and won twice to reach the semifinals of the Open Division, where he fell to Lake Forest alumnus Shane Conneelly ‘97. The Open Champion was another Forester graduate, Mark O’Leary ’01, who defeated Conneelly 21-20, 21-11.

Freshman Mike Mehilos (Addison, IL) and juniors Derek Meiring (Carleton, MI), Arturo Herrera (Anchorage, AK), and Ivan Ruiz (Los Angeles, CA) reached the round of 16 in the Open Division before falling. In the B-Division, Ruiz defeated Herrera and Mehilos eliminated both Meiring and Ruiz on his way to the final, where he was defeated by Megan Mehilos ’04, his older sister.

Senior Marty Quinn (Evergreen Park, IL) reached the final of the C-Division, where he was finally defeated by another former Forester, Derek Tiveron ’03. Senior Victor Pacheco (Highland Park, IL) and freshman Kevin Jarvis (Chicago, IL) each won once to reach the C-Division semifinals.

The next tournament on the Foresters’ schedule is the Milwaukee Classic December 3-4.
