Growing up in Providence, Rhode Island, Jim attended Salisbury School in Connecticut where he lettered in soccer, hockey, and tennis and was captain of all three teams.  As a senior he was selected All-New England in hockey and received the Quail Medal, recognizing him as the outstanding athlete at Salisbury.

Jim entered Lake Forest College in 1967 and went on to earn four varsity letters in hockey and three in both tennis and soccer.  He was captain of the soccer team and was selected to the All-District team.  In hockey, Jim received All America recognition as a junior and senior and was captain his final season.

Following his graduation, Jim, a history major, entered the world of politics.  He eventually served as the chairman of the Rhode Island Republican Central Committee and worked as a special assistant to President Gerald Ford.  He also served as campaign chairman in the Rhode Island gubernatorial race.  His professional pursuits included highly successful ventures into the insurance and  investment and banking businesses, including serving as Chairman and CEO of  Fleet Trust and Investment Company in Florida.
