Glaser grew up in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and earned his high school degree
by correspondence.
He entered Lake Forest College in the fall of 1945 and earned four varsity letters in baseball, an extremely rare accomplishment for his time. As one of the team's top players and a four-year starter in centerfield, Glaser was noted for his timely hitting and excellent fielding. During arguably his finish season, 1947, he led the team to an undefeated record by leading the team in hitting and completing the season without an error. Glaser was also involved in recreational touch football and played on the Lake Forest Merchants softball team. Also during his Lake Forest career, Glaser was an alternate Rhodes Scholar and received Shields honors for the highest-ranking senior. He earned the Emma O. Haas award and was a member of Phi Ete Sigma, Sigma Ete, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Iron Key. Herb served as Homecoming Chairman in 1948 and was Secretary of his senior class. He was also named to the National Who's Who of American College Students list and graduated summa cum laude from Lake Forest College in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduation, Glaser went on to become the President of the Elder Beerman Stores. He retired in 1997 and has since been chairman for the Caring For Kids campaign. He has also been actively involved in the community, serving on several boards and committees, and has taught classes at several major universities.
