Foresters Split Pair of Home Games against NCHA Foes
Team knocks off #5 River Falls, falls to Stout

Graham Melbourne scored the game winner Friday night.
LAKE FOREST, IL – The Lake Forest College men’s hockey team split a pair of Northern Collegiate Hockey Association home games over the weekend (December 2-3). The Foresters upset UW-River Falls, the nation’s fifth-ranked team, 3-2 Friday night before falling 4-3 to UW-Stout the following afternoon. Lake Forest is now 6-7-0 overall and 3-3-0 in league play this year.

The Foresters fell behind on Friday when the Falcons scored a power play goal at 9:55 in the first period.

The home team converted a power play opportunity of its own just 54 seconds into the second stanza to tie the score. The goal was junior Matt Forsyth’s (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) second of the season and was assisted by senior Bryan Lafevor (Ft. Wayne, IN/Chicago Freeze). Two minutes later, senior Cory Wilson’s (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) unassisted goal put Lake Forest ahead 2-1. The lead was short-lived, however, as another power play goal by the visitors tied the score at the 6:20 mark.

The game winner was scored by junior Graham Melbourne (Belleville, ON/Trenton Sting) and assisted by sophomore Adam Tobias (Rockford, IL/Robert Morris University) at 3:03 in the third period. It was Melbourne’s third goal in as many games after 24 scoreless appearances in his career, most of which was spent as a defenseman.

Freshman goaltender Scott Campbell (Bloomfield, ON/Elmira Sugar Kings) recorded 36 saves to earn the win. He lowered his goals against average on the year to 2.93 and lifted his save percentage to .917.

The Foresters scored first on Saturday when Forsyth and freshman Peter Morrison (Roseville, MN/Roseville High School) assisted freshman Chris Wilson (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Cornwall Colts) at the 6:23 mark of the opening period. Stout tied the score just 62 seconds later.

The Blue Devils took their first lead of the game with a goal at 1:40 in the second stanza and added a power play score at 11:08 to claim a 3-1 advantage.

Wilson pulled to home team to within one with his sixth goal of the season at 8:27 in the third. Tobias was credited with the assist. Lake Forest pulled the goalie and tied the score with just 45 seconds remaining on sophomore Kevin Russette’s (Amerstburg, ON/Leamington Flyers) first goal of the year. He was assisted by freshman Mike Kneeland (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) and junior Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons). Stout, however, netted the game winner just 30 seconds later.

The Foresters will host St. Norbert College Tuesday (December 6) night at 7:30 in a non-conference game. It will be the squad’s final contest of the fall semester.
