Lake Forest Splits First NCHA Series of the Season
Foresters defeat St. Scholastica, fall to UW-Superior

Tyler Canal scored at least one point in ten straight games.
LAKE FOREST, IL - The Forester men’s hockey team split its first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series of the season over the weekend (December 3-4). Lake Forest hosted and defeated the College of St. Scholastica 3-2 Friday night before falling 4-1 at home to UW-Superior the following evening. The Foresters are now 5-5-1 overall this season and 1-1-0 in the league.

St. Scholastica’s power play goal at the 6:14 mark of the opening period was the only score of the game’s first 50 minutes.

Junior Cory Wilson’s (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) goal at the 12:38 mark of the third tied the score and senior Robin Charest (Cabano, QC/Hebron Academy) converted a power play opportunity to give the home team the lead less than two minutes later. Sophomore Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons) took over the squad’s lead in assists by helping on both goals. Senior Dave Williams (Thornhill, ON/Thornhill Rattlers) also recorded an assist on Charest’s sixth score of the year. After the Saints tied the score at the 18:08 mark, sophomore Greg Ihnken (Peoria, IL/Chicago Freeze) lit the lamp for the first time this season with just 33 seconds remaining in the game. Senior Ryan Scapinello (Guelph, ON/Stratford Cullitons) and junior Troy Lother (Beach Park, IL/Green Bay Gamblers) assisted on the game winner.

Senior Cody Brown (Calgary, AB/Calgary Canucks) recorded 21 saves in the victory. He also stopped 33 of 36 shots on goal on Saturday to raise his save percentage on the year to .899.

After Superior and Lake Forest were held scoreless for more than a period-and-a-half, Forester junior Tyler Steen (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) broke the tie with his fourth goal of the year at the 13:36 mark of the second stanza. Charest and sophomore Jordan Kniaziew (Leamington, ON/Leamington Flyers) were each credited with an assist. Charest’s helper tied him with Canal for the team lead with seven this season. For Canal, it was the first game this season without at least one point.

The Yellowjackets did not get on the scoreboard until the 5:47 mark of the third period but added what turned out to be the game winner just 32 seconds later. The visitors added an insurance goal at 17:53 and an empty netter at 19:58 to close out the scoring.

After a few weeks off, the Foresters will compete in Norwich University’s Times Argus Invitational the final two days of the calendar year. Lake Forest will face off against Manhattanville College in the semifinals on Thursday, December 30, and take on either the hosts or Elmira College the next day.
