Foresters Finish Fifth in NCHA Standings After Split on the Road
Team falls at Superior, wins at St. Scholastica

Tyler Canal leads the Foresters with 15 goals and 20 assists.
DULUTH, MN - The Lake Forest College men’s hockey team split a series on the road over the weekend (February 11-12). The Foresters fell 6-3 at UW-Superior, the nation’s fifth-ranked team, Friday night and defeated the College of St. Scholastica 5-2 the following afternoon. The team finished the regular season with an 11-13-1 overall record and a mark of 7-7-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, good for fifth place in the league standings.

Superior got on the scoreboard first at 6:13 in the Friday’s opening period. The Foresters, however, took the lead with goals by senior Ryan Panet (Markham, ON/Wexford Raiders) at 17:21 and junior Cory Wilson (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) at 18:18. Sophomore Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons) assisted on both Panet’s fourth of the year and Wilson’s ninth. Junior Bryan Lafevor (Ft. Wayne, IN/Chicago Freeze) also helped set up the power play score by Wilson. The Yellowjackets regained the advantage with a pair of goals before the end of the period.

Superior took a 4-2 lead with a power play goal at 18:37 in the second on the period’s only score.

Canal recorded his third assists of the game and team-high 20th of the season on senior Robin Charest’s (Cabano, QC/Hebron Academy) 11th goal of the year just 26 seconds into the third stanza. The home team put the game away with an even strength goal at 7:29 and a power play score at 17:39.

The Foresters surrendered the first goal again on Saturday and trailed 1-0 until the 5:29 mark of the second period when senior Rob Nerland (Calgary, AB/Kimberly Dynamites) lit the lamp for the third time this season. Charest earned the assist. St. Scholastica scored the period’s final goal at 10:30.

Canal tied the game just 20 seconds into the third period. Seniors Eric Luka (Berwyn, IL/Fenwick H.S.) and Dave Williams (Thornhill, ON/Thornhill Rattlers) assisted on Canal’s team-leading 15th goal of the season. An unassisted score, his fifth of the year, by junior Troy Lother (Beach Park, IL/Green Bay Gamblers) at 3:37 proved to be the game winner. He and senior Ryan Scapinello (Guelph, ON/Stratford Cullitons) assisted on sophomore Greg Ihnken’s (Peoria, IL/Chicago Freeze) fourth goal of the season at 8:43 and freshman Andrew Ferrier’s (Stratford, PEI/Truro Bearcats) shorthanded empty-net goal with six seconds remaining was the first score of his career.

Senior Cody Brown (Calgary, AB/Calgary Canucks) saved 34 of 36 (94.4%) shots on goal to earn the victory. He is now 7-6-1 with a 3.03 goals against average and .907 save percentage on the season.

Lake Forest finished just one point behind UW-Stevens Point for fourth place in the league standings and will travel to Stevens Point for an NCHA Peters Cup quarterfinals series next weekend (February 18-19). The teams will face off at 7:30 both Friday and Saturday nights.
