LAKE FOREST, IL – The Lake Forest College men’s hockey team extended its 2005-06 season by sweeping UW-Stevens Point at home over the weekend (February 17-18) in the NCHA Peters Cup quarterfinals. The Foresters won 5-2 Friday evening and 4-1 the following night to raise their record on the year to 15-12-0. The Pointers fell to 12-11-4.

The home team led 2-0 at the end of Friday’s opening period after goals by juniors Brian Lee (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) at 4:57 and Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons) at 12:17. Canal assisted on Lee’s score and scored his 14th of the season off a pass from freshman Mike Kneeland (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals).

The Foresters extended the lead to three goals on senior Bryan Lafevor’s (Ft. Wayne, IN/Chicago Freeze) third goal of the year at 9:39 in the second. Junior Graham Melbourne (Belleville, ON/Trenton Sting) earned the assist. Stevens Point, however, pulled to within one with scores at 11:49 and 16:46.

Lee scored his second goal of the game at 10:30 in the third off assists from both Canal and Kneeland. It was Canal’s 100th career points, making him the 23rd player in team history to reach the mark and just the seventh to do so in less than four years. Junior Greg Ihnken (Peoria, IL/Chicago Freeze) added a shorthanded empty net goal with 46 seconds left to seal the victory. He was assisted by freshman Chris Wilson (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Cornwall Colts).

Freshman goaltender Brandon Kohuch (Winsdor, ON/Chatham Maroons) was in goal Friday night and stopped 40 of 42 shots on goal in the contest, including all 20 in the third period. He is now 9-5-0 with a .925 save percentage and 2.82 goals against average on the year. Classmate Scott Campbell (Bloomfield, ON/Elmira Sugar Kings) was between the pipes on Saturday and matched his season-high with 47 saves. He has won each of his last three games and posted a .957 save percentage in that span.

The home team took a 2-0 lead again on Saturday. Sophomore Adam Tobias (Rockford, IL/Robert Morris University) scored his 12th goal of the year off an assist from freshman Joe Papineau (Stoney Pointe, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen) at 14:52 in the first period. Kneeland and Canal then assisted on junior Matt Forsyth’s (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) third goal of the season at 9:31 in the second.

The visitors cut the lead in half just 81 seconds into the third but Lee’s scored his third tally of the weekend and ninth of the year at 18:14 to restore the two-goal cushion. Kneeland assisted Lee and then closed out the scoring with his team-high 15th goal of the season, an empty netter, at 19:15.

Lake Forest’s single-game semifinal will be at UW-Superior next Saturday (February 25) night.
