Foresters Fall at Stevens Point, Skate to Tie at Eau Claire
Team scores pair of shorthanded goals on Saturday

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The Lake Forest College men’s hockey team dropped a 6-2 decision at UW-Stevens Point Friday (February 2) night before skating to a 3-3 tie at UW-Eau Claire the next evening. The Foresters are now 3-17-3 overall and 0-9-3 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play.

Stevens Point scored at 4:46 and 14:55 of Friday’s opening period to take the early lead.

Senior Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, Ont./Stratford Cullitons) cut the margin in half with his seventh goal of the year at the 8:30 mark of the second stanza. He was assisted by classmate Brian Lee (Calgary, Alb./Calgary Royals) and freshman Petter Andersson (Nybro, Sweden/Springfield Jr. Blues). The Pointers regained their two-goal advantage with a power play score at 15:51.

The home team put the game out of reach with a goal at 6:43 in the third period and a shorthanded score at 9:09. Sophomore Peter Morrison (Roseville, Minn./Roseville High School) converted the same power play opportunity with his fourth goal of the season just 29 seconds later. Stevens Point tacked on a final score with 33 seconds remaining in the contest.

Lake Forest jumped out to the early lead on Saturday with a pair of shorthanded goals in the opening period. Freshman Justin Taylor (Guilfer, Conn./Walpole Stars) scored the first at 13:47. His third goal of the season was assisted by fellow freshman Nick Ghidina (Pekin, Ill./Wichita Falls Wildcats). Senior Greg Ihnken (Peoria, Ill./Chicago Freeze) also scored for the third time this year at 18:43 off an assist from sophomore Matt Oke (St. Lambert, Que./Nepean Raiders).

Eau Claire scored a power play goal at 3:54 in the second, tied the game at 12:50, and took the lead on another power play score at 19:43.

Junior Blake O’Keefe (Almonte, Ont./Gloucester Rangers) scored the game-tying goal at the 8:57 mark of the third period. His second goal of the year was assisted by Oke and sophomore Chris Wilson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cornwall Colts).

Sophomore Brandon Kohuch (Windsor, Ont./Chatham Maroons) tallied 41 saves in the game .

Lake Forest will close out the regular season next weekend (February 9-10) against St. Norbert College, who was ranked fourth in the nation in the last poll. The teams will face off in De Pere, Wisconsin, Friday night at 7:00 and in Lake Forest at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
