Team vaults from seventh to tied-for-fourth in NCHA standings

Tyler Canal had three goals and an assist on the weekend.
LAKE FOREST, IL – The Lake Forest College men’s hockey team won a pair of Northern Collegiate Hockey Association games over the weekend (February 3-4), defeating UW-Stevens Point 3-1 Friday night and UW-Eau Claire 3-2 on Saturday. The Foresters are now 12-11-0 overall this season and 6-6-0 in league play. Stevens Point fell to 11-8-3 (5-5-1 NCHA) and Eau Claire is now 2-18-3 (0-11-1).

After a scoreless opening period on Friday, Forester junior Brian Lee (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) put the home team ahead at the 15:45 mark of the second. Classmate Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons) and senior Bryan Lafevor (Ft. Wayne, IN/Chicago Freeze) assisted on Lee’s sixth goal of the year. Senior Cory Wilson (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) added his seventh goal of the season at 18:44 off an assist from junior Matt Forsyth (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals).

Canal lit the lamp at the 11:40 mark of the third period off an assist from freshman Mike Kneeland (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) but the three-goal lead was brief, as the Pointer netted their only score of the contest just 13 seconds later.

Freshman goaltender Brandon Kohuch (Winsdor, ON/Chatham Maroons) stopped 43 of 44 shots on goal in the victory, raising his record on the year to 8-4-0 and his save percentage to .929. Classmate Scott Campbell (Bloomfield, ON/Elmira Sugar Kings) was between the pipes on Saturday and turned away all but two of Eau Claire’s 26 shots on goal. His save percentage on the season is now .912.

The first period was again scoreless and the Blugolds took the first lead of the game at the 6:05 mark of the second. A pair of penalties on the visitors set up a five-on-three situation for the Foresters and sophomore Kevin Russette (Amerstburg, ON/Leamington Flyers) scored to tie the game at 9:23. Freshman Peter Morrison (Roseville, MN/Roseville High School) assisted on Russette’s third goal of the year. The home team also converted the ensuing power play opportunity when Canal scored at 10:50. Wilson and junior Graham Melbourne (Belleville, ON/Trenton Sting) were credited with the assists.

After Eau Claire tied the game at the 6:58 mark of the third period, Canal scored his second goal of the contest, third of the weekend, and team-high-tying 13th of the season at 11:22. Kneeland, who also has 13 goals and leads the squad with 21 assists and 34 points, recorded the helper on Canal’s game winner.

The Foresters, who are now tied for fourth place in the NCHA standings, will take on league-leading St. Norbert College twice next weekend (February 10-11). The teams will play in Lake Forest at 7:30 Friday night and in De Pere, Wisconsin, at 7:00 p.m. Saturday.
