Lake Forest Knocks Off Stout and River Falls at Home
Steen and Canal combine for 11 points in the sweep

Tyler Steen is this year's Peter Taylor Award winner.
LAKE FOREST, IL - The Forester men’s hockey team stayed in the race for one of the top four spots in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings with a sweep of league teams over the weekend (February 4-5). Lake Forest defeated UW-Stout 6-3 Friday evening and upset UW-River Falls, the nation’s eighth-ranked team, 3-2 the following night. The team is now 10-12-1 overall and 6-6-0 in league play, one point out of fourth in the standings and two below third-place River Falls.

After surrendering the game’s first goal Friday at the 4:34 mark of the opening period, the Foresters lit the lamp three times in the next three minutes. Senior Ryan Panet (Markham, ON/Wexford Raiders) knocked home the first two at 5:34 and 6:57 and junior Troy Lother (Beach Park, IL/Green Bay Gamblers) scored the third at 7:11. Panet now has three goals this season and Lother four. The visitors’ power play goal at 14:37 trimmed the lead to one but was followed by junior Tyler Steen’s (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) eighth of the year exactly two-and-a-half minutes later.

Earlier in the week the Foresters voted for this year’s Peter Taylor Award winner, and Steen was presented with the award during the first intermission.

Junior Matt Forsyth (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) scored his second goal of the season at the 7:45 mark of the second period. The Blue Devils cut the lead to two at 16:19 in the second but would not score again on senior Joel Cameron (Markham, ON/Milton Merchants), who tallied 33 saves on the night.

Sophomore Greg Ihnken (Peoria, IL/Chicago Freeze) added his third of the season with 7:26 to play in the game off an assist from senior Ryan Scapinello (Guelph, ON/Stratford Cullitons), who had two helpers in the game. Steen, sophomore Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons), and senior Robin Charest (Cabano, QC/Hebron Academy) also had two assists in the contest.

Forester senior Cody Brown (Calgary, AB/Calgary Canucks) stopped 34 of 36 River Falls shots on goal Saturday night, including 17 of 18 in the opening period.

Canal tied the game at 4:54 in the second and, after the Falcons went ahead again just 34 seconds later, Canal scored his second of the contest and team-high 14th of the season at the 6:51 mark.

Junior Bryan Lafevor (Ft. Wayne, IN/Chicago Freeze) scored the game winner, his first goal of the season, just 39 seconds into the third period. Steen assisted on all three Forester scores.

Lake Forest will play at UW-Superior next Friday (February 11) night at 7:00 and at the College of St. Scholastica at the same time the following evening.
