MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. - The Lake Forest College men's hockey team split a pair of games in Minnesota over the weekend (January 9-10), prevailing 5-2 at St. Mary's University Friday evening before falling 7-2 at the University of St. Thomas the next night. The Foresters are now 5-11-1 on the season. St. Mary's fell to 1-9-1 and St. Thomas raised its record to 6-5-2.

The only goal of Friday's first period was scored by St. Mary's at the 3:25 mark.

The Foresters tied the game at 4:15 in the second period on senior Joe Papineau's (Stoney Pointe, Ontario/Kitchener Dutchmen) first goal of the season. He was assisted by sophomore Zach Kozak (Mesa, Ariz./Northland College), who gave the visitors the lead at 11:26. Senior Matt Schoepflin (Arvada, Colo./Culver Military Academy) and junior Justin Taylor (Sun Valley, Idaho/Walpole Stars) were each credited with an assist.

Schoepflin then recorded another assist on a shorthanded goal by senior Mike Kneeland (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Royals) at the 2:41 mark of the third period. Kneeland added his second shorthanded goal of the game at 11:23 with junior Peter Pfeffer (Farmington Hills, Mich./Walpole Stars) earning an assist. The Cardinals converted a power play opportunity at 16:45 to make the score 4-2 but an unassisted empty net goal by Forester freshman Ethan Goldberg (Green Oaks, Ill./Chicago Mission) with 42 seconds left on the clock put the game away. It was Goldberg's first collegiate goal.

Lake Forest senior goaltender Brandon Kohuch (Windsor, Ontario/Chatham Maroons) recorded 37 saves to earn the victory and raise his save percentage on the season to .924.

The Foresters fell behind just 30 seconds into Saturday night's game and St. Thomas doubled the lead at the 6:44 mark of the opening period. Kneeland lit the lamp for the third time on the weekend and team-high ninth time this season just 35 seconds later to pull the visitors back to within one. Senior Chris Wilson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cornwall Colts) assisted on the goal. The Tommies, however, regained their two-goal lead on a power play score with 5:01 to play in the period and led 3-1 at the first intermission.

The home team then pulled away with a shorthanded goal at 4:57 in the second stanza and an even-strength goal at 11:16.

Kozak scored his seventh goal of the year 67 seconds into the third period to make the score 5-2. He was assisted by Taylor and junior Adam Love (Durham, Ontario/Elmira Sugar Kings). St. Thomas scored on the power play at 8:43 and notched the game's final goal at 15:19.

Senior goaltender Scott Campbell (Bloomfield, Ontario/Elmira Sugar Kings) became the first player in team history to surpass the 2,000 save mark for his career.

Lake Forest will resume Northern Collegiate Hockey Assiociation play next Saturday night (January 17) at defending national champion St. Norbert College. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. and a live video webcast of the contest will be available at audiosportsonline.net.
