Foresters Fall to St. Thomas and St. Mary’s
Ryan Kupperman scores three goals on the weekend

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College men’s hockey team dropped a pair of non-conference games at home over the weekend (January 11-12). The Foresters fell 5-1 to the University of St. Thomas, the nation’s fourth-ranked team, on Friday and dropped a 7-4 decision to St. Mary’s University on Saturday. The team is now 2-14-1 on the season.

St. Thomas took the early lead on Friday with a goal just two minutes into the contest. The Tommies scored again at 6:06 and 13:29 in the opening period and added scores at 1:09 and 7:38 (shorthanded) in the second.

The Foresters’ only goal was the first in the career of freshman Ryan Kupperman (Canterbury, N.H./Green Mountain Glades), who lit the lamp with three-and-a-half minutes to play in the second period. He was assisted by junior Mike Kneeland (Calgary, Alb./Calgary Royals) and sophomore Justin Taylor (Sun Valley, Idaho/Walpole Stars).

Lake Forest junior goaltender Scott Campbell (Bloomfield, Ont./Elmira Sugar Kings) matched his career-high with 47 saves in the contest.

St. Mary’s also got on the scoreboard first on Saturday with a goal at the 5:21 mark of the opening period. The Foresters tied the score on a Kupperman goal at 7:51. Assists were credited to juniors Peter Morrison (Roseville, Minn./Roseville High School) and Matt Oke (St. Lambert, Que./Nepean Raiders). The Cardinals took the lead with tallies at 11:12 and 17:48.

St. Mary’s pulled away on a shorthanded goal just seven seconds in to the second period and a power play goal at the 7:33 mark. Kupperman and Kneeland assisted on Taylor’s third score of the season at 9:03 and Lake Forest trailed 5-2 heading into the final period.

The visitors’ score at the 4:38 mark of the third period was matched by Forester sophomore Adam Love (Durham, Ont./Elmira Sugar Kings) at 10:22. His sixth goal of the season, which tied Kneeland for the team lead, was assisted by Oke and freshman Tony Razik (Palos Park, Ill./Boston Harbor Waves). The teams traded goals again in the 12th minute with St. Mary’s scoring at 11:46 and Kupperman netting his third score of the weekend and season just 12 seconds later. Taylor and Kneeland again earned the assists.

The Foresters will travel to St. Norbert College, the top-ranked team in the nation, for a 7:00 p.m. game next Saturday (January 19).
