ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Lake Forest College men’s hockey team fell twice in Minnesota over the weekend (January 12-13). The team dropped a 4-3 decision at Bethel University Friday evening and fell 5-4 at Hamline University the next night. The Foresters are now 3-12-1 on the year. Bethel raised its record to 5-6-1 and Hamline is now 5-10-0.

The home team took the early lead on Friday with a pair of goal in the game’s first 30 seconds. The Foresters cut the lead in half with a power play score with just 42 second remaining in the period. Sophomore Chris Wilson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cornwall Colts) and senior Greg Ihnken (Peoria, Ill./Chicago Freeze) assisted on sophomore Joe Papineau’s (Stoney Pointe, Ont./Kitchener Dutchmen) first score of the season. Bethel, however, regained its two-goal lead just 16 seconds later.

Forester freshman Nick Ghidina (Pekin, Ill./Wichita Falls Wildcats) scored his first career goal at the 7:03 mark of the second period to once again pull the visitors to within one score. He was assisted by Wilson and sophomore Mike Kneeland (Calgary, Alb./Calgary Royals).

Lake Forest tied the score on sophomore Matt Schoepflin’s (Arvada, Colo./Culver Military Academy) first career goal at the 3:25 mark of the third period. Junior Blake O’Keefe (Almonte, Ont./Gloucester Rangers) recorded the only assist. Bethel scored the game winner on the power play at 13:04.

Forester sophomore Scott Campbell (Bloomfield, Ont./Elmira Sugar Kings) tallied 37 saves in the contest, marking the seventh time in his eight starts that he has stopped at least 90 percent of the opponent’s shots on goal.

Lake Forest scored first on Saturday when Kneeland lit the lamp for the first time this year at the 15:27 mark of the first period. He was assisted by senior Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, Ont./Stratford Cullitons). Hamline tied the game 46 seconds into the second period and took the lead at the 3:51 mark. Canal scored from senior Brian Lee (Calgary, Alb./Calgary Royals) and sophomore Matt Oke (St. Lambert, Que./Nepean Raiders) at 7:54 to tie the score but the home team regained the lead at 12:51.

Lee converted a power play opportunity just 27 seconds in to the third period with assist credited to Kneeland and Canal. Lee leads the Foresters with eight goals on the season. Hamline scored at 7:28 and Lake Forest tied the game again at 9:02 on Canal’s sixth of the year. Kneeland and Oke each recorded an assist. The Pipers scored the game’s final goal on a penalty shot at 10:13.

The Foresters will resume Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play on the road next weekend (January 19-20). The team will play at UW-Superior Friday night at 7:00 and at the College of St. Scholastica at the same time on Saturday.
