LAKE FOREST, IL – The Forester men’s hockey team won a pair of non-conference games at home over the weekend (January 13-14), defeating Hamline University 4-2 on Friday night and Bethel University 4-3 in overtime the following afternoon. Lake Forest raised its record on the year to 9-8-0 and dropped Hamline and Bethel’s marks to 1-11-2 and 7-6-0, respectively.

After a scoreless first period on Friday, sophomore Adam Tobias (Rockford, IL/Robert Morris University) finally put the Foresters on the scoreboard at 5:39 in the second. Freshman Chris Wilson (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Cornwall Colts) recorded the assist, his first of five points on the weekend. Hamline tied the game at 10:08 and took the lead at 14:44 with the final goal of the period.

Wilson converted a power play opportunity at 1:25 in the third period to tie the score. He was assisted by fellow freshman Peter Morrison (Roseville, MN/Roseville High School). Senior Cory Wilson (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) then scored what turned out to be the game winning goal with 8:15 remaining. Freshman Ramin Taheri (Encino, CA/L.A. Jr. Kings) and junior Graham Melbourne (Belleville, ON/Trenton Sting) assisted on Cory Wilson’s third goal of the year. Chris Wilson closed out the scoring at 14:12 off assists by Tobias and freshman Matt Oke (St. Lambert, QE/Nepean Raiders).

Freshman goaltender Brandon Kohuch (Winsdor, ON/Chatham Maroons) recorded 34 saves to earn the victory on Friday and stopped 34 of 37 Bethel shots on goal in Saturday’s triumph. He is now 6-3-0 this season with a .924 save percentage and 2.83 goals against average.

Chris Wilson started the scoring just 66 seconds into Saturday’s contest with his third goal of the weekend and 10th this season. Senior Bryan Lafevor (Ft. Wayne, IN/Chicago Freeze) earned the first of his two assists in the game. Bethel scored at 11:13 and the period ended with the teams tied 1-1.

Four goals were scored in the second period, beginning with two by the Royals at 10:25 and 13:12. Freshman Mike Kneeland (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) pulled the home team to within one with a power play score at 13:40. Lafevor and junior Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons) were each credited with an assist. Tobias scored for the fifth time this season at 14:39 to tie the score. Chris Wilson and junior Matt Forsyth (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) each recorded an assist.

Neither team was able to light the lamp in the third stanza and it appeared as if the five-minute overtime period would also be scoreless until Kneeland went coast-to-coast and found the back of the net with just 10 seconds left on the clock. It was his team leading 11th goal and third game winner of the year.

The Foresters will host Northern Collegiate Hockey Association foes UW-Superior and College of St. Scholastica next Friday and Saturday (January 20-21), respectively. Both games will begin at 7:30 p.m.
