LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College men’s hockey team fell 5-4 in overtime at home to Lawrence University Tuesday (January 23) night. The non-conference loss dropped the Foresters’ overall record to 3-15-1 as Lawrence evened its mark at 8-8-1.

The Vikings scored just 23 seconds in to the contest and again at the 17:44 mark of the opening period to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Forester senior Brian Lee (Calgary, Alb./Calgary Royals) converted a power play opportunity at 5:56 in the second to pull the home team to within a goal. Senior Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, Ont./Stratford Cullitons) and sophomore Mike Kneeland (Calgary, Alb./Calgary Royals) assisted on Lee’s team-high ninth score of the season. The visitors, however, took advantage of a power play chance of their own at 14:43 to regain a two-goal advantage heading into the final period.

Lake Forest junior Kevin Russette (Amherstburg, Ont./Leamington Flyers) scored his first goal of the season at the 2:09 mark of the third period. His power play score was assisted by Canal and sophomore Matt Oke (St. Lambert, Que./Nepean Raiders). Kneeland then tied the game with another power play goal at 5:19. Lee and Canal were credited with the assists. The home team took its first lead of the game at 17:23 on senior Greg Ihnken’s (Peoria, Ill./Chicago Freeze) second score of the season. The team’s fourth power play goal of the contest was assisted by sophomore Joe Papineau (Stoney Pointe, Ont./Kitchener Dutchmen). Lawrence, however, pulled its goalie with a minute left and scored its second power goal chance of the contest with just 20 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Vikings’ overtime goal was scored with 1:55 remaining in the five-minute extra period.

Canal’s three assists in the game give him 122 points in his career, tied for 10th in team history. He also ranks 10th in career assists with 72.

The Foresters will resume Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play at home this weekend (January 26-27). The team will host UW-Stout at 7:30 Friday evening and UW-River Falls at the same time the next night.
