Foresters Fall to Superior, Defeat St. Scholastica at Home

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Forester men's hockey team split a pair of Northern Collegiate Hockey Association games over the weekend (January 24-25). Lake Forest was defeated 4-3 by UW-Superior on Friday but rebounded for a 4-1 victory over the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday. The Foresters are now 11-6-4 overall and 4-5-1 in NCHA play. Superior raised its overall record to 14-4-2 and its league mark to 7-1-1 on Friday. St. Scholastica finished the weekend with a 4-15-1 overall record and 1-8-1 NCHA mark.

Superior's Ryan Melbourne scored the only goal of the first period Friday night. In the second, however, the teams combined for five goals, beginning with Superior's Colin Kendall at the 5:07 mark. Senior David Evans (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Royals) put the Foresters on the scoreboard with his team-leading 16th goal of the season at 14:21. After the visitors' Rob Whidden scored at 15:07, Lake Forest pulled back to within one just 11 seconds later on freshman Tyler Steen's (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Royals) sixth of the year. Superior's Chris Hacket finished the barrage with a power play goal at 19:12.

Sophomore Ryan Scapinello (Guelph, Ontario/Stratford Callitons) scored his first of the season with two minutes remaining to bring the Foresters within a goal again, but they were unable to even the score.

On Saturday, Lake Forest sophomore Andrew Francone (Unionville, Ontario/Milton Merchants) started the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 7:46 mark of the first period. St. Scholastica tied the game five minutes later with a goal by Kenny Kolquist.

In the second period, Forester sophomore Robin Charest (Cabano, Quebec/Coaticooh Jr. A) scored at the 2:13 mark. His fifth of the year was the only goal of the period and turned out to be the game winner.

Freshman Cory Wilson (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Royals) scored a power play goal, his ninth of the season, at the 5:50 mark of the third and then assisted on Francone's empty-netter, his second of the game and 13th of the year, with just six seconds remaining in the contest.

Sophomore Joel Cameron (Markham, Ontario/Milton Merchants) tallied 35 saves to raise his record to 4-3-3 on the year. 

Lake Forest will travel to UW-Stevens Point (11-9-1, 6-4-0 NCHA) and UW-Eau Claire (1-16-2, 1-8-1) next weekend (January 31-February 1). Friday's game at Stevens Point will begin at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday's at Eau Claire will start at 7:05 p.m.
