Foresters Finish Season Sweep of MSOE with 6-2 Victory
O’Connor scores twice in final non-conference game of the year

BROOKFIELD, WI - The Lake Forest College men’s hockey team triumphed 6-2 Tuesday (January 27) night at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The victory improved the Foresters’ record on the year to 13-4-2 and dropped the Raiders’ mark to 7-14-0.

Freshman Greg Ihnken (Peoria, IL/Chicago Freeze) started the scoring at the 7:51 mark of the first period with his second goal of the season. Senior Troy Muspratt (Calgary, AB/Calgary Canucks) and junior Eric Luka (Berwyn, IL/Fenwick H.S.) were each credited with an assist. Senior Bryan O’Connor (Calgary, AB/Calgary Canucks) also scored with 1:04 remaining in the period to give the Foresters a two-goal advantage heading into the locker room. Freshman Graham Melbourne (Belleville, ON/Trenton Sting) earned the assist, his first career point.

Senior Ryan Scapinello (Guelph, ON/Stratford Cullitons) tallied the eventual game-winner just 29 seconds into the second stanza off an assist from junior Robin Charest (Cabano, QC/Hebron Academy). It was Scapinello’s seventh goal of the year and Charest tied freshman Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons) for the team lead with 13 assists. O’Connor lit the lamp for the second time in the game and tenth time this season at 5:54. The goal was unassisted, as was junior Andrew Francone’s (Unionville, ON/Milton Merchants) sixth score of the year, which gave Lake Forest a 5-0 lead at the second period’s 13:45 mark. MSOE finally got on the scoreboard with 2:04 remaining before the second intermission.

Canal recorded his team-high 22nd point of the year at 4:18 in the third period. Fellow freshman Cam Doull (Marwayne, AB/Lloydminster Blazers) and sophomore Bill Fetherston (Aurora, ON/ Plattsburgh St. University) each recorded an assist on Canal’s ninth goal of the season. The Raiders closed out the scoring with their second goal at the 7:47 mark.

The Foresters put at least five more shots on goal than their hosts in each period and out-shot the Raiders 33-17 in the game. Junior Cody Brown (Calgary, AB/Calgary Canucks) needed just 15 saves to raise his record on the year to 7-2-2. The victory was the 298th in the career of 26-year head coach Tony Fritz.

Lake Forest will host a pair of important Northern Collegiate Hockey Association games this weekend (January 30-31). The Foresters will face off against UW-Eau Claire (13-5-1, 3-4-1 NCHA) at 7:00 Friday night and against UW-Stevens Point (11-6-1, 4-3-1) at the same time on Saturday. Stevens Point is tied for third in the league standings with nine points while Lake Forest and Eau Claire are tied for fifth with seven. Last weekend (January 23-24) the Foresters lost 3-2 at Stevens Point and tied Eau Claire 3-3.
