Lake Forest Skates to a 2-2 Tie with Nation’s Third-Ranked Team

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Forester men’s hockey team played Northern Collegiate Hockey Association home games against a pair of top-five ranked teams over the weekend (January 26-27). UW-Stout, the nation’s fifth-ranked team, defeated Lake Forest 4-1 Friday night and on Saturday the Foresters skated to a 2-2 tie with UW-River Falls, which entered the weekend ranked third in the country. Lake Forest is now 3-16-2 overall and 0-8-2 in league play.

Stout scored the only goal of Friday’s opening period at 9:23.

The Blue Devils scored again just 29 seconds into the second period. The home team pulled to within a goal with a power play score by sophomore Mike Kneeland (Calgary, Alb./Calgary Royals) at the 12:23 mark. Senior Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, Ont./Stratford Cullitons) and sophomore Matt Oke (St. Lambert, Que./Nepean Raiders) assisted on Kneeland’s fourth score of the year.

The visitors put the game out of reach with third period goals at 9:58 and 16:03.

Sophomore goaltender Scott Campbell (Bloomfield, Ont./Elmira Sugar Kings) recorded 39 saves in the contest and owns a .916 save percentage on the year. Fellow sophomore Brandon Kohuch (Windsor, Ont./Chatham Maroons) tallied a career-high 52 saves the next night, matching the seventh-highest total in team history.

The home team scored first against River Falls when senior Brian Lee (Calgary, Alb./Calgary Royals) lit the lamp at 5:40 in the first period. Oke assisted on Lee’s team-high 10th overall and sixth power play goal of the year.

The Foresters extended their lead at the 16:23 mark of the second period on sophomore Peter Morrison’s (Roseville, Minn./Roseville High School) third score of the season. He was assisted by senior Greg Ihnken (Peoria, Ill./Chicago Freeze) and sophomore Chris Wilson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cornwall Colts).

The Falcons got on the scoreboard with just 4:07 remaining in the third period and then tied the score at 19:18 after pulling their goalie.

Lake Forest will be on the road next weekend (February 2-3). The Foresters will face off at UW-Stevens Point Friday night at 7:30 and at UW-Eau Claire Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
