Lake Forest Wins at Stout, Drops Close One at River Falls
Canal and Kneeland each record five points on the weekend

RIVER FALLS, WI – The Forester men’s hockey team triumphed 5-3 at UW-Stout Friday (January 27) night before falling 4-3 at UW-River Falls, the nation’s fourth-ranked team, on Saturday (January 28). Lake Forest is now 9-10-0 overall this season and 4-6-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Stout fell to 12-8-0 overall and 5-4-0 in the league. River Falls is 14-4-3 overall and 6-3-1 in the NCHA.

Stout jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Friday with a power play goal at 2:14 in the first period and an even strength score at 5:48. The Foresters pulled to within one when freshman Mike Kneeland (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) and junior Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons) assisted senior Cory Wilson (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) on a power play score at 12:22.

Canal assisted Kneeland at the 8:02 mark of the second period to tie the score but the Blue Devils regained the lead at 11:18 and held a 3-2 advantage going into the third period.

Canal tied the game again just 33 seconds into the final frame off an assist from senior Jordan Kniaziew (Leamington, ON/Leamington Flyers). The Foresters finally took the lead on Wilson’s sixth goal of the season and second power play score of the game at 9:03. He was assisted by Kneeland, who recorded his third helper of the game just 56 seconds later on Canal’s 10th goal of the year.

Freshman goaltender Brandon Kohuch (Winsdor, ON/Chatham Maroons) stopped 38 of 41 shots on goal to raise his record on the year to 7-4-0 and his save percentage to .924. Classmate Scott Campbell (Bloomfield, ON/Elmira Sugar Kings) was in goal Saturday night and recorded a season-high 47 saves.

After River Falls scored the opening period’s only goal, the Foresters tied the score at 10:23 in the second. Junior Brian Lee (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) and sophomore Kevin Russette (Amerstburg, ON/Leamington Flyers) assisted on Kneeland’s team-high 13th goal and 32nd point of the season.

The game’s other five goals were all scored in the final period. The Falcons converted a power play opportunity just 56 seconds into the frame and pulled ahead by two with another score at 3:39. Forester sophomore Adam Tobias (Rockford, IL/Robert Morris University) lit the lamp for the ninth time this season at 6:56. He was assisted by freshman Peter Morrison (Roseville, MN/Roseville High School). The visitors tied the game again at 11:41 when Lee and Canal assisted on Kniaziew’s second goal of the year but River Falls scored the game winner with just 1:54 left on the clock.

The Foresters will be at home next weekend (February 3-4) with a game against UW-Stevens Point on Friday and one against UW-Eau Claire on Saturday. Both contests will begin at 7:30 p.m.
