EAU CLAIRE, WI - The Lake Forest College men’s hockey team split a pair of Northern Collegiate Hockey Association road games over the weekend (January 28-29). The Foresters fell 3-2 at UW-Stevens Point Friday evening and prevailed 5-1 at UW-Eau Claire the following night. The team is now 8-12-1 overall and 4-6-0 in the NCHA and trails Stevens Point by a point for fourth in the league standings.

The Foresters scored first Friday night at the 2:59 mark of the opening period. Freshman Brian Lee (Toronto, ON/Calgary Royals) and sophomore Greg Ihnken (Peoria, IL/Chicago Freeze) assisted on senior Ryan Scapinello’s (Guelph, ON/Stratford Cullitons) second goal of the year. Stevens Point tied the game with a power play goal just 72 seconds later to close out the first period scoring.

The Pointers took the lead for good on another power play goal with 15 seconds remaining in the second period and went ahead by two scores at 7:21 in the third. Lake Forest junior Cory Wilson (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) converted a power play opportunity at 13:32 off assists from sophomore Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons) and senior Dave Williams (Thornhill, ON/Thornhill Rattlers), but the Foresters would get no closer.

Senior goaltender Joel Cameron (Markham, ON/Milton Merchants) tallied 34 saves in the game, including 25 in the first two periods. It was his fifth straight game with a save percentage of at least .900.

Senior Cody Brown (Calgary, AB/Calgary Canucks) was in goal Saturday night and stopped 27 of 29 Blugold shots on goal. He is now 5-6-1 with a save percentage of .900 on the season.

Canal started the scoring on Saturday at the 6:58 mark of the opening period off assists from Wilson and sophomore Kevin Russette (Amerstburg, ON/Leamington Flyers). Senior Andrew Francone (Unionville, ON/Milton Merchants) scored for the second time this year at 13:50 with classmate Ryan Panet (Markham, ON/Wexford Raiders) earning the assist. Wilson and junior Bryan Lafevor (Ft. Wayne, IN/Chicago Freeze) assisted junior Tyler Steen’s (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) power play goal, his seventh of the season, at 18:49 to give the visitors a 3-0 lead after the first period.

Canal scored his team-high 12th goal of the year just 25 seconds in to the second stanza. Steen and senior Robin Charest (Cabano, QC/Hebron Academy) were each credited with an assist on the power play goal. Eau Claire finally got on the scoreboard with a power play goal at 16:16.

Charest netted the only goal of the third period at the 18:19 mark. The team’s third power play score of the game was assisted by Canal and junior Troy Lother (Beach Park, IL/Green Bay Gamblers).

Lake Forest will be back at home next weekend (February 4-5). The Foresters will host UW-Stout at 7:30 Friday night and UW-River Falls at the same time on Saturday.
