MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Forester men’s hockey team split a pair of games to finish as the runner-up at Middlebury College’s Holiday Classic over the weekend (January 4-5). Lake Forest defeated Skidmore College 6-3 on Friday before falling 3-1 to the hosts in Saturday’s championship. The Foresters are now 2-12-1 on the season. Skidmore fell to 2-4-2 and Middlebury, the 12th-ranked team in the nation, is 6-2-1.

After missing the Foresters’ 13 fall semester games while studying abroad, junior Peter Morrison (Roseville, Minn./Roseville High School) scored the first goal of Friday’s contest at the 12:08 mark of the opening period. He was assisted by freshman David Ridos (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Warriors) and senior Blake O’Keefe (Almonte, Ont./Gloucester Rangers). Ridos then scored his first career goal at 15:39 off an assist from freshman Matt Helderman (Huntington, Conn./The Gunnery).

Morrison assisted freshman Peter Pfeffer’s (Farmington Hills, Mich./Walpole Stars) power play goal just 16 seconds into the second stanza. Skidmore responded with a goal at 1:58 and a power play score at 6:18 before tying the score on a shorthanded goal at 7:42. Pfeffer gave the Foresters the lead for good by converting another power play opportunity at 8:04. His fourth goal of the year was assisted by sophomores Justin Taylor (Sun Valley, Idaho/Walpole Stars) and Adam Love (Durham, Ont./Elmira Sugar Kings). Love extended the lead to 5-3 with his fifth goal of the season at 10:46. He was assisted by junior Chris Wilson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cornwall Colts) and freshman Ryan Kupperman (Canterbury, N.H./Green Mountain Glades).

The game’s final tally was Taylor’s second of the season and was scored at 12:24 in the third period. Kupperman and junior Mike Kneeland (Calgary, Alb./Calgary Royals) were credited with the assists.

Junior goaltender Scott Campbell (Bloomfield, Ont./Elmira Sugar Kings) tallied 39 saves in Friday’s game and 40 more on Saturday while surrendering three goals in both contests.

Lake Forest scored first again in the championship on sophomore Petter Andersson’s (Nybro, Sweden/Springfield Sr. Blues) first career goal at the 10:25 mark of the opening period.

After a scoreless second period, Middlebury tied the score at the 2:57 mark of the third, took the lead less than two minutes later (4:48), and put the game away on an insurance goal at 17:58.

After the game Campbell and Morrison were named to the Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team.

Lake Forest will play a pair of home games next weekend (January 11-12). The team will host the University of St. Thomas Friday night at 7:30 and St. Mary’s University at the same time on Saturday.
