On Friday against St. Thomas, freshman forward Mike Kneeland (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) equaled the score at one with his second career goal midway through the first period. He was assisted by junior Jordan Kniaziew (Leamington, ON/Leamington Flyers), who also was credited with the assist on senior forward Tyler Steen’s (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) first goal of the year at the 19:05 mark to give the Foresters a 2-1 lead after the first period.
The visitors notched the game-tying goal in the second period and neither team found the back of the net again until freshman Joe Papineau (Stoney Pointe, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen) found junior forward Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons) for the game-winning goal in the third period. Although Lake Forest was out shot 46-19, freshman goaltender Brandon Kohuch (Winsdor, ON/Chatham Maroons) gloved a career-high 44 saves in the 3-2 win.
The following day, Lake Forest scored a pair of first-period goals and added another score in each of the final two periods en rout to the team’s win over St. Mary’s University. Senior forward Cory Wilson (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) was the first Forester to score, as he took a pass from freshman Chris Wilson (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Cornwall Colts) and put in the net at 8:15. Two minutes later, Canal and Papineau assisted on Steen’s second goal of the weekend.
The home team built a 3-0 lead within the first two minutes of the second period after Kneeland scored off an assist from senior Bryan Lafevor (Ft. Wayne, IN/Chicago Freeze). St. Mary’s netted its first goal of the game 31 seconds after Kneeland’s score, then added another at the 13:13 mark in the third period, but Chris Wilson added an insurance goal, the first of his career, with 3:48 to play to give the Foresters a 4-2 lead, the game’s final score. Kneeland and sophomore Kevin Russette (Amerstburg, ON/Leamington Flyers) were credited with the assist on Wilson’s goal, and both are tied for second on the team in assists with three apiece.
Freshman goalkeeper Scott Campbell (Bloomfield, ON/Elmira Sugar Kings) earned the victory, as he stopped 30 of 32 shots on goal.
The Foresters will open NCHA play this weekend on the road at College of St. Scholastica on Friday (November 18) and UW-Superior on Saturday (November 19).
