Foresters Split another Weekend Series in Minnesota
Canal and Charest combine for 11 points

Tyler Canal scored twice in both weekend games.
ST. PAUL, MN - For the second weekend in a row, the Forester men’s hockey team split a series against teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Lake Forest fell 6-4 at Bethel University Friday (November 12) night and prevailed 6-2 at Hamline University the following afternoon. The team is now 3-2-0 so far this season and has yet to begin Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play.

Junior Tyler Steen’s (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) power play goal put the visitors on top just 3:40 into Friday’s game. Senior Robin Charest (Cabano, QC/Hebron Academy) and junior Bryan Lafevor (Ft. Wayne, IN/Chicago Freeze) each earned an assist on Steen’s second score of the season. Bethel tied the game at the 5:02 mark and took a 2-1 lead into the locker room after scoring again at 13:55.

After the home team increased its advantage to 3-1 five minutes into the second period, Charest pulled the visitors back to within one at the 14:28 mark. His power play goal was assisted by senior Dave Williams (Thornhill, ON/Thornhill Rattlers) and sophomore Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons). Bethel, however, regained its two-goal lead with just 34 seconds remaining in the period.

Williams assisted Canal at the third period’s 5:37 mark and again at 8:09 to tie the score at four, but the Royals scored the eventual game winner at 16:50 and added an empty net goal with a second left on the clock to seal the victory.

The Foresters scored first again on Saturday. Senior Ryan Scapinello (Guelph, ON/Stratford Cullitons) lit the lamp for the first time this season at the 7:51 mark of the opening period off assists from junior Troy Lother (Beach Park, IL/Green Bay Gamblers) and sophomore Greg Ihnken (Peoria, IL/Chicago Freeze). After the Pipers tied the score just 82 second later, Canal broke free with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 12:37 and then added a power play goal, which turned out to be the game winner, at 15:54. Charest and Lafevor were each credited with an assist on Canal’s fifth goal of the year.

Lake Forest junior Cory Wilson (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) scored the second period’s only goal and added his second of the game and season 2:40 into the third. Charest and senior Andrew Francone (Unionville, ON/Milton Merchants) assisted on both Wilson scores. Charest also recorded his career-high fourth point of the game at 8:28 off an assist from sophomore Graham Melbourne (Belleville, ON/Trenton Sting). Charest and Canal now share the team lead with five goals, four assists, and nine points. Hamline converted a power play at 16:08 for the game’s final tally.

Senior Cody Brown (Calgary, AB/Calgary Canucks) recorded 28 saves to earn his fist win of the year.

Lake Forest will be at home for the first time this season next weekend (November 19-20). The Foresters will host Gustavus Adolphus College Friday night at 7:30 and St. Olaf College Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
