Lake Forest, Ill. – The Forester men’s hockey team dropped a pair of Northern Collegiate Hockey Association games at home over the weekend (November 17-18). The College of St. Scholastica defeated Lake Forest 5-2 Friday night and UW-Superior won 5-3 on Saturday. The Foresters are now 2-6-0 this season while victories raised St. Scholastica’s mark to 4-1-0 and Superior’s to 5-1-0. It was the opening weekend of league play.

The home team took the early lead on Friday when senior Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, Ont./Stratford Cullitons) lit the lamp just 50 seconds in to the contest. He was assisted by classmate Brian Lee (Calgary, Alb./Calgary Royals). St. Scholastica tied the game on a power play goal at 2:54 in the opening period, which ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Saints scored the only goal of the second period at 3:23.

The visitors then pulled away in the third with a goal at 7:43 and another 16 seconds later. Lee brought the Foresters to within two goals at 11:05 with his team-high fifth score of the season. He was assisted by Canal and freshman Chris Thiess (Naperville, Ill./Kingston Voyageurs). St. Scholastica, however, put the game away with an empty net goal with 46 seconds left in the contest.

After a scoreless opening period, Superior got on the board first Saturday night with a power play goal at the 8:02 mark of the second. The Foresters tied the game at the period’s 10:29 mark on a power play goal by sophomore Chris Wilson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cornwall Colts). Junior Adam Tobias (Rockford, Ill./Robert Morris University) and sophomore Peter Morrison (Roseville, Minn./Roseville High School) recorded assists as Wilson matched Lee’s team-leading total of five goals. The Yellowjackets regained the lead just 35 seconds later. Lake Forest converted its next power play opportunity as well when Canal scored his second goal of the weekend and season at 13:00. Once again the tie was short-lived as Superior went back on top, this time for good, just 26 seconds later.

The visitors extended their lead to 4-2 at the 8:45 mark of the third period. The home team pulled to within a goal at the 12:30 mark when Wilson assisted freshman Justin Taylor’s (Guilfer, Conn./Walpole Stars) first career goal. For the second straight night, however, an empty net goal in the final minute put the game out of the Foresters’ reach.

Lake Forest will resume league play at home next weekend (November 24-25). The team will host UW-Eau Claire at 7:30 Friday evening and UW-Stevens Point at the same time Saturday night.
