LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College men's hockey team began the 2003-04 season with a 3-2 victory at home Sunday (November 2) over UW-Superior, the sixth-ranked team in the country. Although both schools are members of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, the game did not count in the NCHA standings. The loss was the first of the year for Superior in three games.

The Foresters got on the scoreboard first at the 10:26 mark of the opening period on freshman forward Scott Taje's (Wetaskiwin, Alberta/Lloydminster Blazers) first career goal. Sophomore forward Cory Wilson (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Royals) and senior forward Bryan O'Connor (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Canucks) were each credited with an assist. The teams combined for 22 minutes in the penalty box and a Superior player was ejected from the game during the first period.

The intense play continued in the second period as 13 penalties were called and 34 minutes in the teams' penalty boxes were served. Both teams scored once during the period. Junior forward Robin Charest (Cabano, Quebec/Hebron Academy) made the score 2-0 in favor of the home team just seven seconds into the frame off an assist from senior defenseman Chris Rook (Barrie, Ontario/Milton Merchants). Superior's Yann Poirier scored with only 20 seconds remaining to pull the Yellowjackets to within a goal.

The visitors tied the score at the 11:42 mark of the third period on a goal by Beau Moyer, but the upset-minded Foresters were not discouraged. Freshman forward Greg Ihnken (Peoria, IL/Chicago Freeze) scored the game-winner with 5:34 remaining off assists from sophomores Bryan Lafevor (Ft. Wayne, IN/Chicago Freeze) and Troy Lother (Beach Park, IL/Green Bay Gamblers).

Junior goaltender Joel Cameron (Markham, Ontario/Milton Merchants) tallied 41 saves in the victory and is now 2-2-1 against Superior in his career.

The teams combined for 29 penalties in the game but each had just two in the final period. Both squads were 0-for-6 in power play opportunities.

Lake Forest will host a pair of teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference next weekend (November 7-8). The University of St. Thomas, the nation's 14th-ranked team, will visit on Friday and St. Mary's University will be in town on Saturday. Both games will begin at 7:00 p.m.
