Freshman Chris Wilson’s (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Cornwall Colts) unassisted goal just 96 seconds in to the contest started the scoring on Friday. The Blugolds tied the game at the 15:32 mark of the first period.
Senior Bryan Lafevor (Ft. Wayne, IN/Chicago Freeze) scored just 65 seconds in to the second stanza to give the visitors the lead for good. Junior Graham Melbourne (Belleville, ON/Trenton Sting) lit the lamp at 11:28 and a power play goal by junior Matt Forsyth (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) at 14:51 extended the Forester advantage to 4-1. The goals were the first of the season for all three players. Eau Claire’s tally at 17:53 closed out the period’s scoring.
The home team pulled to within one at the 5:56 mark of the third period but scores by junior Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons) and freshman Peter Morrison (Roseville, MN/Roseville High School) at 8:33 and 10:59, respectively, put the game out of reach.
Freshman goaltender Scott Campbell (Bloomfield, ON/Elmira Sugar Kings) stopped 35 of 38 (92.1%) Blugold shots on goal to earn the victory, the first of his career against an NCHA team. Fellow freshman goalie Brandon Kohuch (Winsdor, ON/Chatham Maroons) also allowed three goals and recorded 47 saves on Saturday for a .940 save percentage and his first NCHA win.
Morrison scored the game’s first goal at 5:37 in the opening period and Wilson converted a power play at 8:43 for his fourth goal of the year. Freshman Mike Kneeland (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) lit the lamp at 15:44 and Morrison’s sixth goal of the season at 19:19 closed out the period’s scoring.
Sophomore Adam Tobias (Rockford, IL/Robert Morris University) added to the lead with his third goal of the season at 11:33 in the second and, after Stevens Point finally got on the scoreboard at 17:00, Kneeland scored his sixth of the year at 18:26 and Melbourne added his second at 19:09. Kneeland finished the game with a school record-tying four assists and six points.
Lafevor’s second score of the season was sandwiched between two Pointer goals in the third period.
Lake Forest will host UW-River Falls next Friday (December 2) night at 7:30 and the Foresters will entertain UW-Stout at 2:30 the following afternoon.
