Foresters Fall at St. Norbert, Defeat Marian at Home
Wilson scores twice on Sunday

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College men’s hockey team split a pair of non-conference games over the weekend (November 27-28). The Foresters fell 6-3 Saturday night at St. Norbert College, the third-ranked team in the nation, and defeated Marian College 5-2 at home Sunday afternoon. Lake Forest is now 4-4-1 on the year. St. Norbert raised its record to 7-2-1 and Marian fell to 4-5-1.

Senior Rob Nerland (Calgary, AB/Kimberly Dynamites) scored for the first time this season at the 16:05 mark of Saturday’s first period, cutting the Green Knights’ lead to 2-1. Sophomore Greg Ihnken (Peoria, IL/Chicago Freeze) and senior Ryan Scapinello (Guelph, ON/Stratford Cullitons) each recorded an assist. The home team scored one more goal in the first and two in the second to take a 5-1 advantage. Sophomore Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, ON/Stratford Cullitons) scored his team-high eighth goal of the year on the power play at 2:47 in the third period off assists from junior Tyler Steen (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) and senior Robin Charest (Cabano, QC/Hebron Academy). Junior Troy Lother (Beach Park, IL/Green Bay Gamblers) notched his first at 10:58 with Scapinello and senior Eric Luka (Berwyn, IL/Fenwick H.S.) each earning an assist.

Four of the Green Knights’ six goals came on the power play.

After the teams combined for 22 penalties on Saturday, Lake Forest and Marian were cited a total of four times on Sunday. Senior Dave Williams (Thornhill, ON/Thornhill Rattlers) scored the first period’s only goal at the 14:07 mark. Nerland and junior Cory Wilson (Calgary, AB/Calgary Royals) were each credited with an assist on Williams’s fourth of the season.

Steen notched his third of the year at the 2:37 mark of the second off assists by Charest and freshman Andrew Ferrier (Stratford, PEI/Truro Bearcats). Wilson lit the lamp at 5:03 from Canal and Williams to give the home team a 3-0 lead. Marian scored at 8:55 and again at 11:05 to pull to within a goal. Lother’s second goal of the weekend and season came just 44 seconds later with Scapinello recording his third assist of the weekend and Ihnken his second. Wilson scored his second of the game and fourth of the year at 18:13 off assists from Lother and senior Ryan Panet (Markham, ON/Wexford Raiders).

Neither team was able to score in the third period.

Senior goaltender Cody Brown (Calgary, AB/Calgary Canucks) recorded 22 saves to raise his record on the year to 2-2-1.

Lake Forest will begin Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play at home next Friday and Saturday (December 3-4). The Foresters will host the College of St. Scholastica Friday night at 7:30 and UW-Superior at the same time on Saturday.
