Lake Forest Completes another Weekend Split
Team falls to #13 St. John’s, defeats Augsburg

Chris Wilson
Lake Forest, Ill. – The Forester men’s hockey team split a pair of home games against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams over the weekend (November 3-4). Lake Forest fell 8-5 to St. John’s University, the nation’s 13th-ranked team, Friday night before rebounding for a 6-2 triumph over Augsburg College on Saturday. The Foresters are now 2-2-0 on the year.

Lake Forest took the early lead over St. John’s on a power play goal by senior Graham Melbourne (Belleville, Ont./Trenton Sting) 5:16 into the contest. He was assisted by freshman Justin Taylor (Guilfer, Conn./Walpole Stars) and senior Brian Lee (Calgary, Alb./Calgary Royals). The Johnnies then rattled off three goals in 70 seconds in the middle of the period before Melbourne converted another power play opportunity at 14:24. Taylor and senior Tyler Canal (Thunder Bay, Ont./Stratford Cullitons) earned the assists as Melbourne recorded his first career two-goal game. St. John’s added one more goal at 18:31 and led 4-2 at the first intermission.

Canal assisted Lee on another power play conversion just 20 seconds in to the second period and the home team tied the score on freshman Chris Rashotte’s (Tweed, Ont./Kanata Stallions) first career goal at 7:45. He was assisted by senior Matt Forsyth (Calgary, Alb./Calgary Royals). The visitors, however, regained the lead at 9:30 and doubled the margin at 16:43.

Another St. John’s goal at 7:15 of the third period made the score 7-4. Forester sophomore Chris Wilson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cornwall Colts) brought the home team to within two at 14:11 off an assist from junior Adam Tobias (Rockford, Ill./Robert Morris University) but an empty net goal by the Johnnies with 32 seconds remaining sealed the victory for the visitors.

Lee started the scoring Saturday night just 3:40 into the contest. Melbourne and Canal assisted. Wilson then extended the Lake Forest lead with goals at 5:24 and 16:58. Sophomore Peter Morrison (Roseville, Minn./Roseville High School) assisted on both goals and Tobias also aided the second. The Auggies finally got on the scoreboard with 2:11 left on the first period clock.

Tobias lit the lamp for the first time this year at the 10:40 mark in the second. Canal and Taylor assisted the shorthanded goal. Augsburg cut the lead to 4-2 at the 12:17 mark and that is how the period ended.

Lee scored his team-high fourth goal of the year just 47 seconds into the final stanza with Tobias earning the assist. Wilson completed his hat trick and four-goal weekend with the game’s final goal at 4:38.

Sophomore Scott Campbell (Bloomfield, Ont./Elmira Sugar Kings) tallied 37 saves in the contest and is now 2-0-0 on the season with a .942 save percentage.

The Foresters will visit Minnesota next weekend (November 10-11) when they travel to St. Mary’s University Friday night and to the University of St. Thomas on Saturday. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m.
