FORESTERS SWEEP SEASON-OPENING SERIES WITH MSOE
The Lake Forest men's hockey squad used a newfound scoring touch to sweep their season-opening series with Milwaukee School of Engineering, the first-ever meeting between the two schools. After being held to three or fewer goals 14 times last season, the Foresters exploded for seven goals on both Friday (Oct. 29) and Saturday (Oct. 30) night to record 7-3 and 7-2 victories, respectively. A pair of rookies led the scoring barrage for the Foresters. Freshmen David Evans (Calgary, Alberta) and Matt Bruni (Unionville, Ontario) each tallied six points for weekend. Evans had a goal and five assists while Bruni registered three goals and three assists.
On Friday, Lake Forest responded to MSOE's opening goal with three of their own, including back-to-back goals by James Austin (Burlington, Ontario). Bruni had the season's first goal for Lake Forest before Austin scored twice. After another MSOE goal pulled the Raiders within a goal at 3-2, the Foresters again rattled off three straight scores, this time by Tom Durkin (Chicago, IL), Bill Boyes (Bright's Grove, Ontario), and Evans. MSOE got a third goal before Bruni closed the scoring with a third period score. Ten different Foresters recorded at least one assist, including two apiece by Sean O'Neill (Stow, MA) and Evans.
Lake Forest wasted little time jumping on MSOE on Saturday. The Foresters scored three times in the game's first 6:25, including two goals within 23 seconds of each other. Scott McClure (Calgary, Alberta) started the scoring at the 3:07 mark and Boyes followed with a goal of his own at the 3:30 mark. O'Neill scored the Foresters' third goal of the period 6:25 into the contest. After MSOE scored two of the game's next three goals, Lake Forest scored the game's last three goals to seal the 7-2 victory.
A pair of junior net-minders each garnered a win. Mason Black (Smith Falls, Ontario) stopped 24 shots for the win on Friday and Justin Howard (Burlington, Ontario) had 22 saves on Saturday. They combined to stop 90.2% of MSOE's shots on goal.
Lake Forest will take their 2-0-0 overall record into their NCHA season-opener this coming weekend (Nov. 5-6). The Foresters will entertain St. Norbert, the three-time defending conference regular season champion, on Friday before traveling to St. Norbert on Saturday. Lake Forest was picked to finish fifth in the NCHA this season and St. Norbert third by a pre-season poll of the league coaches.
