Inducted 1990 Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, Joe attended Amundsen High School. Captain of the football team, he also lettered in basketball and baseball. Joe entered Lake Forest in 1936 and earned his freshman numerals in football and baseball. Over the next three years he lettered in both sports. An outstanding fullback he was one of the stalwarts of the undefeated 1938 team and was the number one pitcher on the Forester baseball team. A member of Kappa Sigma fraternity he was also a participant in the Letterman's Club. Shortly after graduating in 1940 Joe earned a commission (LT.J.G.) in the U.S. Navy and saw considerable combat duty in the Atlantic Theatre as captain of a landing craft and received numerous medals including a Bronze Battle Star for his participation in the invasion of France. After his honorable discharge in 1945 he started his business career as co-owner of a bowling alley before accepting a sales position with E.W. Boehm, a distributor for A.B. Dick. Ten years later Joe went to work for Xerox Corporation becoming one of their top salesmen and ultimately was appointed National Account Representative for Government Sales, a position he held until his retirement.
