Inducted 2001 Jonathan Kendler was born and grew up in Evanston, IL. His grandfather, Bob Kendler, was the founder of the United States Handball Association. Jonathan played high school baseball and attend Evanston High School for three years before graduating from Lake Forest High School in 1981. In 1980, he won handball's National 17-and-under title. Kendler entered Lake Forest College in the fall of 1981. The Foresters won the United States Handball Association Intercollegiate Tournament in each of his first three seasons and he won the singles title as a senior after placing second each of the two previous years. In doubles, Kendler won the national championship in 1984 with Tim Zender and, in 1985, he partnered with Jim Carkeek to place second. Kendler captained the 1984-85 team and was named its Most Valuable Player following the season. Jonathan also lettered in baseball in 1982 and served as the student-trainer and manager for the football team from 1981-84. The 1983 team won the Midwest Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. After graduating from Lake Forest in 1985, Kendler continued his handball career and was the National 3-Wall Singles Champion in 1988. He won the National 4-Wall Professional Doubles Championship in 1986 and 1987 and the World 4-Wall Doubles Championship in 1986 and 1988. He also played on the United States Handball Association Pro Tour, compiling a 71-47 won-loss record from 1982 to 1996 and winning three tournaments along the way. Kendler used his Lake Forest College Bachelor of Arts degree in business and economics to make his mark in the world of real estate finance and management. He has also owned his own mortgage company. Jonathan lists his wife, Debbie, and his two children, Bradley and Emily, as his greatest lifetime achievement.
