Inducted 1998 Growing up in Waukegan, Illinois, Joe played basketball and football at Waukegan Township High School. An All-Country football player in 1936, he also served as vice-president of his senior class. Entering Lake Forest College in 1937, Joe earned three varsity letters in football, in each of those three seasons, Joe received All-Conference honors. As a senior he was awarded the Clayton Mark Trophy, which recognized him as the Most Valuable Player. During his accomplished athletic career at Lake Forest, he had the distinction of playing on two undefeated teams: 1938 and 1940. Joe's other activities on campus include membership in Phi Pi Epsilon fraternity, the Economics Club, and the Lake Forest Club. After graduating in 1941, Joe entered the U.S. Navy serving as an Amphibious Forces staff officer seeing duty in the Pacific Theatre and participating in the battles of Palau and Okinawa. After an honorable discharge in 1946, he accepted a position with the Westclox Division of General Time Corporation remaining with them until hi retirement. In 1976, Joe played an instrumental role in organizing fellow club members to purchase Deer Park Golf Club in Ogelsby, IL, where he served as president for many years.
