Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, Les attended Proviso East High School where he played football.

He entered Lake Forest in 1931 and earned three letters in football, three in basketball and three in baseball.  He was also a member of Phi Pi Epsilon.

Graduating with a degree in history  Les attended DePaul University and received his Master's degree in education.  He then started a 28-year career at Harvard School for Boys.  He served as football and basketball coach, Athletic Director and principal.  He was also part owner of the school and the director.  He then became Athletic Director and football coach at Lake Forest Academy.  In 1969 and 1970 the Academy was voted the number one small school football team in Illinois.  During many of his summers, he was a couselor at Camp Highlands, Plum Lake, in Sayner, Wisconsin, where he coached baseball.  In 1971 Les retired from coaching and also received the Distinguished Service Citation From Lake Forest College.
