Foresters Triumph at Ripon, Fall at Lawrence
Team is now 3-3 in MWC play

APPLETON, WI - The Lake Forest College men’s basketball team recorded a 71-60 victory at Ripon College Friday (January 13) night before falling 78-57 at Lawrence University, which entered the week as the nation’s sixth-ranked team, the following afternoon. The Foresters are now 5-8 overall this season and 3-3 in Midwest Conference play.

Senior guard Greg Klos (Carol Stream, IL/Glenbard North) led all players with 20 points at Ripon. He shot 7-for-14 from the field and 6-for-11 from three-point range in the contest. Senior forward Brad Rathe (Deer Park, IL/Lake Zurich) was the only other Forester in double figures with 16 points. He was 6-for-10 from the floor and made each of his four attempts from beyond the arc. Rathe also pulled down four rebounds and shared the team lead with four assists. Senior forward Franklyn Beckford (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) scored eight points and recorded a game-high nine rebounds.

Lake Forest shot 45.3% from the field, 12-for-23 from three-point range, and 11-for-12 from the free throw line. Ripon shot 38.3% from the field, 3-for-16 from beyond the arc, and 21-for-33 from the foul line. The Red Hawks held a slight 31-30 edge in rebounds and 10-9 edge in turnovers.

A 7-0 Forester run early in the game gave Lake Forest the lead for good. The visitors pulled away by as many as 12 points in the first half and led 36-26 at intermission. Ripon closed to within just three points (47-44) midway through the second half but an 11-4 Forester run widened the gap to 10. The Red Hawks then scored five in a row but would get no closer.

Junior guard Brad Wehner (Sheboygan, WI/Sheboygan North) led the visitors at Lawrence on Saturday with 20 points. He also added a team-high seven rebounds and three assists. Klos reached double figures with 10 points and also had three assists.

The Vikings out-shot the Foresters 59.3% to 45.7% from the field. The home team also made 12 of 20 three pointers and two of five free throws. Lake Forest shot 4-for-14 from three-point range and 11-for-16 from the line. The visitors out-rebounded Lawrence 26-25 but committed three more turnovers (12-9).

The home team led by as many as 14 points in the first half and 36-25 after 20 minutes of play. The Foresters scored the first six points of the second half to cut the lead to five (36-31) but would get no closer. The Vikings pulled away with a 17-4 run over the next six minutes and maintained a double-figure lead the rest of the way.

Lake Forest will play at Illinois College at 7:30 Tuesday (January 17) night and at Grinnell College Saturday (January 21) afternoon at 3:00.
