Foresters Defeated at the University of Chicago

CHICAGO, IL - The Lake Forest College men's basketball team dropped its fourth straight game Saturday (January 4), a 66-54 decision at the University of Chicago. The Foresters are now 1-7 on the season and are finished with the non-conference portion of their schedule.

Senior guard Lee Taylor (Sheldon, IA/Sheldon) was the only Lake Forest player in double figures. He scored 10 points and added three steals and a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman guards John Pugliese (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) and Greg Klos (Carol Stream, IL/Glenbard North) each scored nine points. Pugliese shot three-for-four from three-point range.

Derek Reich was the only Maroon to score in double figures. He recorded game-highs with 29 points and 11 rebounds.

The Foresters shot just 35% from the field and 25% (7/28) from beyond the three-point arc. Chicago was 43.6% overall but just 5-for-20 from long-range. The teams combined to make just 18 of 37 free throw attempts.

Both teams struggled to score early in the game and Lake Forest led 5-4 after seven minutes of play. Chicago went on a 9-0 run and, after five straight points from the visitors, an 11-0 run to take a 24-10 advantage with seven minutes remaining in the half. The Foresters outscored Chicago 14-6 to close out the period and trailed 30-24 at intermission.

Lake Forest trimmed the margin to five points four times early in the second half but could get no closer. The Maroons used a 15-4 run to extend the lead to 16 points (53-37) with nine minutes left. The closest Lake Forest was able to get was eight points down (55-47) the rest of the way.

The Foresters' next 15 games will all be against Midwest Conference opponents, beginning on Wednesday (January 8) at Illinois College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Next Saturday (January 11), Lake Forest will play at Monmouth College at 4:00 p.m.
