Martha Alderman (Cochrane) '66
Growing up in Joliet, Illinois, Martha  attended Joliet High School.  Due to the lack of girls' varsity programs in high school, Martha participated in a number of intramural activities and the Joliet Park District tennis program.

Entering Lake Forest in 1966, she earned four varsity letters in both tennis and basketball.  In basketball she was the team's leading scorer all four years; set a record for most points scored in one game, 34, and established the career scoring record for women.  In tennis she became the number one singles player as a senior and also had the distinction of winning the intramural badminton tournament four consecutive years.

After graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a chemistry degree, Martha, president of the College's American Chemistry Society, accepted a position teaching high school chemistry in the Chicago public school system.  Ten years later she resigned to raise her family, but continued her love of sports by competing in such diverse activities as dirt motorcycle racing and wind surfing.  She immediately excelled at racing, winning the Women's Division of the Grapevine Trials Competition.
