Martha Gray Herb '77
Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, Martha swam for Westminster High School and hoped to continue competing at the collegiate level.

She entered Lake Forest in 1973 and earned four varsity letters in swimming.  She was voted captain of the team and consistently finished first in her events.  Her senior year she was named Division III All America in seven different events.  Between 1977 and 1985 her times ranked among the top 12 in the state of Illinois in the 500 meter freestyle, 200 meter breastroke and 200 meter freestyle events.

Graduating with a degree in English and French, Martha became a lieutenant commander in the United States Naval Reserve.  As the Executive Officer with the Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit she conducted diving operations all over the world, including archaeological dives to explore sunken war memorials.  She also attended George Washington University to receive her Master's degree in 1992.  In 1994 she was registered as a doctoral candidate with the Armed Forces.

Martha was also actively involved in the Triathalon circuit.  She established herself from Maryland to Florida as one of the top female Triathletes in the 30-35 age bracket.  She also taught Sunday school and coached a local YMCA swim team.
