LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College men's soccer hosted the 2001 Midwest Conference Tournament but fell to Monmouth College in the tourney final on Saturday (November 3rd). The loss ends the Foresters' MWC Championship season and vaults Monmouth into the NCAA Tournament.

In Friday's (November 2nd) tournament semifinal, Lake Forest defeated Ripon College 1-0. Ripon was the four-time defending conference and tournament champion before the Foresters ended both those streaks in the last two weeks. The only goal of the game came off the foot of senior forward Chris Mickschl (Glendale, WI/Nicolet) in the 79th minute. Sophomore midfielder Evan Klaus (Belvedere, CA/Brooks School) recorded the assist. The goal was Mickschl's team-leading seventh of the season and the assist by Klaus was his second.

Defensively, the Foresters' junior goalkeeper Ed Elliott (Decatur, IL/Culver Military Academy-IN) needed just two saves to post his fifth shutout of the season.

Monmouth advanced to the final by making more penalty kicks than Carroll College in their semifinal on Friday. After both teams scored a goal in regulation, the teams played two 15-minute scoreless overtimes before turning to a shootout to decide which team would advance. Both teams made four of five goals in the shootout before Monmouth connected on their sixth try and Carroll's shot was blocked.

In the final on Saturday (November 3rd), Monmouth scored the game's only goal in the 40th minute. The Foresters out-shot the Fighting Scots 14-9 but could not find the back of the net.

Lake Forest's final record is 10-7-0, giving them a winning record in 23 of the last 28 years. The Foresters' Midwest Conference Championship gives them 14 over that same time period. Only two players graduate from the 2001 squad so the team is poised to make a run at their 15th MWC Title and their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1980.
