WEEKEND SWEEP GIVES FORSTERS THIRD STRAIGHT WIN
A resurgent defense propelled the Lake Forest men's soccer squad to two wins at Midwest Conference opponents over the weekend. The victories stretched their winning streak to three games and the Foresters won for the fifth time in the last seven games. (Lake Forest's two setbacks during that stretch have been 1-0 losses.) The Foresters dropped Illinois College 3-1 on Saturday and shutout Monmouth 4-0 on Sunday, the team's second shutout in their last three games. The Foresters have not allowed more than one goal in a game since September 14th, the fourth game of the season. While the defense has been rock solid over the past few weeks, it was a rejuvenated offense that helped the Foresters to back-to-back multi-goal wins. The Foresters' seven goals in two games over the weekend equaled their season total through the first eight games.
On Saturday, the Foresters got goals from Matt Spurlin (Littleton, CO/Bear Creek H.S.), Troy Abeln (Bloomington, MN/Bloomington Kennedy H.S.), assisted by Mike Munson (Villiston, VT/Champlain Valley Union H.S.), and Justin Trent (Tampa, FL/Seminole Presbyterian H.S.), assisted by Ryan Lampe (Renton, WA/Kentridge H.S.) in their 3-1 win over IC. Freshman Ed Elliot (Decatur, IL/Culver Military Academy (IN)) stopped five shots on goal to record the win. The victory was Head Coach Ed Kositzki's 64th of his Lake Forest career and move him past Dick Triptow and into second place on the Foresters' all-time coaching victories list. In the midst of his sixth season at LF, Kositzki has a career mark of 65-30-2 for a .680 winning percentage.
On Sunday at Monmouth, senior Michael Richardson (W. Simbury, CT/Forest Hills Central H.S.) recorded 10 saves and did not allow a goal before leaving the game after 87 minutes with an injury. Elliot played the last three minutes in goal to complete the shutout. Munson opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 40:31 mark. Trent then scored twice (assisted by Chad Mickschl (Glendale, WI/Nicolet H.S.) and Lampe, respectively) within a five-minute stretch before Lampe scored the game's final goal (assisted by Bryan Bernard (Louisville, KY/Trinity H.S.)) with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Lake Forest is now 5-6-0 overall (3-5-0 in the MWC) with four non-conference and one conference game remaining on the schedule.
