RIPON, WI - All the Forester men's soccer team had to do Sunday (October 21st) to clinch the program's 14th Midwest Conference Championship was to defeat Ripon, the four-time defending champion, on its own home field. Lake Forest did just that by the score of 2-1 to raise its overall record to 8-6-0 and its MWC mark to 6-3-0.

The Foresters actually finished the MWC regular season tied with Carroll College and Monmouth College could also join the two teams at 6-3-0 with two more victories. Lake Forest defeated Carroll by two goals on September 18th, which eventually turned out to be the tie-breaking edge for the Foresters. Carroll beat Monmouth by a single goal and Monmouth defeated Lake Forest by that same margin.

In Sunday's victory, Ripon jumped ahead in the 15th minute with the game's only first-half goal.

Freshman Mike Lanphier (Denver, CO/East) tied the score in the 55th minute with his first career goal. Senior Chris Mickschl (Glendale, WI/Nicolet) recorded the assist, his team-leading fourth of the year.

The eventual game-winner came in the 83rd minute off the foot of sophomore Caleb Chase (Hanover, NH/Vermont Academy). The goal was the third of the season for Chase, who scored four times in 2000.

Junior goalkeeper Ed Elliott (Decatur, IL/Culver Military Academy-IN) stopped five of six shots on goal to raise his 2001 record to 8-5-0 and drop his goals against average to a paltry 1.26.

Along with the conference championship comes the right to host the league's four-team tournament. The two schools that will join Lake Forest and Carroll have yet to be determined. The #2 and #3 seeds will play at 11:00 am and the #4 seed will play Lake Forest at 1:30 pm on Friday, November 2nd. The winners of Friday's semifinals will play at 12:00 pm on Saturday (November 3rd) for the MWC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament.

The Foresters will play their final regular season game this Thursday (October 25th) when they host Kendall College at 4:00 pm.
