Foresters Start Fast, Hang On to Defeat Carthage 4-3
Team scores four goals in game’s first 35 minutes

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Forester men’s soccer team recorded a 4-3 victory over visiting Carthage College on Saturday (October 2). The win raised Lake Forest’s record on the year to 7-1-2 and dropped the Redmen’s mark to 6-4-1.

The home team scored its first goal just 2:38 into the game when sophomore Michael Watman (Flossmoor, IL/Mount Carmel) headed in his second score of the season off a pass from junior Alex Lofgren (Glenview, IL/Glenbrook South). The Foresters struck again at 9:23 on senior John Karner’s (Gurnee,IL/Warren Township) second of the year. Fellow senior Andrew Cochran (Bedford, NH/Derryfield School) was credited with the assist. The lead grew to three goals on sophomore Walter Echeverry’s (Glenview, IL/Maine Township East) fourth goal of 2004 at the 18:45 mark. He was assisted by freshman Ben Levy (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury). After Carthage finally got on the scoreboard at 29:25, Lake Forest regained its three-goal advantage on senior Victor Pacheco’s (Highwood, IL/Highwood) first of the season. Lofgren earned the assist, his second of the contest. The Redmen found the back of the net again at 41:40 to finally end the first period scoring barrage.

The visitors pulled to within a single goal less than 10 minutes into the second half but neither team was able to score during the final 35 minutes. Sophomore Pat Witwicki (Lake Villa, IL/Antioch) played the first half for the Foresters and earned the victory, raising his record on the year to 5-1-0. Freshman Jake Elperine (Highland Park, IL/Lake Forest Academy) stopped three of four shots on goal in the second period to preserve the win.

Lake Forest will be in action again next Saturday (October 9) at 12:30 p.m. against Carroll College in the team’s Homecoming game. The Foresters are currently 3-1-2 in Midwest Conference play and Carroll is one of two teams ahead of the Foresters with a 4-0-0 league record.
