Lake Forest Ties Monmouth, Shuts Out Illinois College
Attila Schmidt scores two goals and adds an assist on Sunday

Lake Forest, Ill. – The Forester men’s soccer team was unbeaten in a pair of Midwest Conference home games over the weekend (October 21-22). Lake Forest tied Monmouth College 1-1 on Saturday and shut out Illinois College 3-0 on Sunday to even both its overall (6-6-2) and league (3-3-2) records for the season. Monmouth was 4-6-3 overall and 0-4-2 in the MWC after Saturday’s match and Illinois College fell to 2-10-2 overall and 2-5-0 in the conference.

Both goals on Saturday were scored on penalty kicks. Forester junior Josh Enck (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) gave the home team the lead in the game’s 56th minute. Monmouth tied the score with 15:15 to play in regulation.

Lake Forest sophomore Sam Malmberg (Concord, N.H./St. Paul's School) recorded five saves on Saturday and needed just one stop to complete the shutout on Sunday.

Junior Attila Schmidt (Akron, Ohio/Western Reserve), the Foresters’ leading scorer, put Lake Forest ahead of Illinois College in the contest’s ninth minute. He was assisted by sophomore Jovani Villasenor (Highwood, Ill./Highland Park). Schmidt added his team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 25th minute and Lake Forest led 2-0 at intermission. Senior Sam Figueroa (Bartlett, Ill./Barlett) assisted on Schmidt second score of the game.

Villasenor closed out the scoring in the 59th minute with his second goal of the season. He was assisted by Schmidt, who is now tied for the team lead in that category as well.

The Foresters will complete their conference schedule Wednesday (October 25) afternoon at 4:00 when they host Carroll College. The team will finish up its regular season schedule Friday (October 27) night at Wheaton College. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
