FORESTERS' LATE CHARGE EARNS THEN A SPOT IN THE MWC TOURNEY
After starting the season 1-6-0 overall and a
dreadful 0-5-0 in the Midwest Conference, everyone had written off the
Lake Forest College men's soccer squad. Everyone, that is, except the Foresters
themselves. Lake Forest proceeded to rattle off five wins in their next
seven games, including four straight in the MWC, which, when combined with
five straight losses by Knox, put the Foresters in a three-way tie with
Knox and Monmouth for the final spot in the four-team MWC Championship
Tournament. On the strength of a 4-0 win at Monmouth on October 10th and
a Monmouth 1-0 victory over Knox on Saturday (Oct. 23), the Foresters won
the tie-breaker and will advance to the MWC Tournament on November 6-7,
where they will face the winner of the Beloit at Ripon game on Oct. 30th.
Lake Forest has won 13 of the last 25 MWC Championships, including back-to-back
titles in 1995 and 1996, Head Coach Ed Kositzki's
first two seasons at Lake Forest.
Needing a win on Saturday versus Lawrence
to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Foresters scored used 11 saves from
senior goalkeeper Michael Richardson and
a four goals from the Mickschl brothers (Chris
and Chad), including three from Chris, to
propel them to a 5-0 win. Senior Andy Flick added
a goal and an assist, and Mike Munson and Troy
Abeln each had an assist. The 5 goals gave the Foresters 17 goals in
their last 7 games. In contrast, they scored just 6 goals in their first
7 games. |
